Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing of the wind; nothing was gained under the sun. Ecclesiastes 2:11
Take a look at yourself. Are you proud of what you’ve done in your life or of the material possessions you’ve managed to accumulate? Have you hoarded enough treasures to make your life happy? Will your name be remembered when you’re dead and gone?
When it is all said and done, what difference will it make what we’ve done on this earth? After all, no matter what we have when we die, we’re still dead. Our estate will be left behind, to be picked apart by the government. Whatever’s left will be doled out to our family and friends, or perhaps a charity or two.
Still, no matter what we’ve accumulated, it will all be meaningless to God. We will not be allowed into heaven based on the riches we left on earth. No amount of wealth will buy our way into eternity with Him.
God wants us to store our treasures in heaven. He wants us to work for Him and do His will while we’re living so that He can reward us when we get to heaven. If we spend our lives doing His will, we won’t look upon our efforts as meaningless. Nor will God.
Prayer: Dear Lord, please help me take my eyes off of the material world. I want my efforts to build up treasures in heaven. I want all that I do to be looked upon as meaningful and worthy of Your blessing. Help me to keep my eyes upon You in all that I do.
