Small Delights by Stephanie Farrar

Snuggling deep into my jacket, I starred up at the brightly lit sky. Stars twinkled down at me through the thick black night. As I stood in the middle of the field, away from the lights and noise of the city, I marveled at the amount of stars I could see.

That evening I was struck with the realization of how little time people spend really enjoying the small wonders of life. It seems I am driven forward in a hurried atmosphere these days, functioning on automatic and never taking time to think. I love watching the starry sky, but rarely have the opportunity to camp or travel to a secluded place for star gazing.

In an effort to keep up, I make lists of projects, assignments, and daily tasks, expecting to feel relief when I am done. It does feel good to accomplish everything, but I miss the enjoyment of getting involved in a project and having fun completing it. What happened to the days when we just enjoyed doing the small tasks of life?

The amount of work we are supposed to accomplish often seems overwhelming. I finish one task, and another waits to be done. Our society has begun to pursue relief, instead of pursuing joy. I have found that I don’t miss the small things in life until I have done without them. Let’s enjoy them while we have to chance!

When I make an effort to delight in the small details of life, I feel happier and more relaxed than when pursuing relief. Some of the rush and anxiety is lifted, and I know I can accomplish a task and do it well. A life of small joys is more uplifting and satisfying than struggling to complete each project and never enjoying it.

As we continue through life let’s strive to find pleasure in small details and activities. Find a few minutes and spend some time reading a good book, writing a letter, or whatever you enjoy doing. The importance of delighting in the task at hand is often missed in the rush of life. Let’s make an effort and take advantage of the opportunities to get the most from every experience, even things we take for granted.
