Real Life Q&A with Camy Tang

January 2006

Q: I don't know any guys I'm attracted to. How can I meet some nice guys?

A: First off, pray and think about why, exactly, you want to meet guys and date. It's a wild and crazy idea, but maybe God has His own ideas about what He'd like for your life. Maybe He has His own ideas about who He'd like you to date. Maybe it's not such a bad idea to ask God for His direction for your life rather than making your own decisions.

As for meeting new guys, what kinds of guys are you attracted to? Be aware that the best, most compatible guys for you are not necessarily exactly like you. Mr. Perfect is a myth--but Mr. Perfect Just For Me is not. Be ready and willing to compromise a little when you meet Mr. PJFM.

You don't need to go clubbing or any of those "singles" events to meet guys (it's not very likely you'd meet "nice" guys at those places anyway). What do you like to do, and would you like Mr. PJFM to have the same interests? How about joining some clubs or teams in the areas you're interested in?

Now, don't join JUST to meet guys--join because you want to meet other people who enjoy the same things. It will be fun just to meet people and do the things you're interested in--music, art, science, sports, hobbies.

It doesn't have to be affiliated with your church or school, although be careful about choosing clubs and teams with a safe environment--no older guys to take advantage of you or anything like that. Talk it over with your parents, your pastor, your youth leaders--ask for their advice and opinion on any new things you want to do.

Think about your time, too. Do you have time to spend playing field hockey, or going to recitals? Don't let your grades suffer.

Don't go into a new thang immediately drooling over the new guys--get to know the girls first. They can give you the scoop on who's single and who's a jerk. And who knows--you might make a new girlfriend.

Finally, ask God to lead and guide Mr. PJFM to you. He's always faithful, but even more so when you let Him direct your ways. He always places you where He wants you, where you'd be happiest and most content because you're obeying Him.
