Q: How do I know what God's will is?
A: Well, He doesn't speak with words written across the night sky in fire, unfortunately. Bummer, huh?
God's will always starts with prayer. Yeah, technically He already knows what you need to ask him, but the process of coming before Him is important--not for God, but for us.
When we pray for God's guidance or will, our own hearts have to be willing to hear Him. It's useless to ask for God's will if we ourselves have a firm desire in our hearts and we're not really willing to listen to another option, even if God speaks it.
The key here is to come to God with a humble, open heart. Humble because we realize God is ultimately in charge of us and our lives. Open to whatever His answer is, even if it's something we don't want.
It's okay if you prefer one answer over another--it's natural--but it's also important to be completely, honestly willing to obey God's command if He tells us to do what we don't really want to do. That's not to say He definitely will tell you to do something unpleasant, but your heart has to be WILLING.
That's really what God is looking for. Are you willing? Do you trust Him completely to know the best course of action, even if it's against what you'd like?
Once your heart is humble and open, then God will answer you.
God speaks to different people in different ways, so there could be many ways He can speak to you.
Some people "hear" a voice speaking a sentence or phrase to them. Kind of like words deeper than your hearing, words coming from somewhere mysterious inside you.
Some people see tons of circumstances start piling up around them, guiding them to or from a certain path or choice.
Some people get the same message from several strong, trusted Christians when they discuss their problem with them.
Some people read the Bible and certain passages guiding their decision leap off the page and smack 'em in the forehead.
Some people hear from God in just one of the above ways. Some people hear from God through a combination of several of the above ways.
The key is to be willing to obey no matter what He says. He knows what's best for you, and He'll never let you down. He'll never leave you alone.
