Real Life Q&A with Camy Tang

November 2006

Q: All my friends and the pastor and youth leaders are pushing missions trips. What if I don't want to go? Why do I need to go on missions?

A: First of all, going on missions trips doesn't automatically make you a good Christian or put you in a right relationship with God. You knew that already, right?

Second, you should make sure you HAVE that right relationship with God before you decide if you want to go on a missions trip or not.

Why? Because God wants you to be not only willing to go, but happy to go. Dragging you kicking and screaming to a missions trip is not God's idea of a good time.

Also, maybe He doesn't want you to go on a missions trip, but the only way He'd be able to tell you is if your heart is open to whatever He says--whether to go or not. And that means your heart has to be right with Him.

Having your heart "right with God" doesn't mean you have to be perfect, or have your act together, or even be a particularly stellar Christian. It means you're humble and willing to do whatever He asks. That's it. Just trust in Him to tell you what He wants you to do.

If you reeeeeeeeaaaaaallllllly don't want to go on missions, ask yourself why. God likes us to go on missions--the Great Commission and all--but more importantly, God likes for us to be happy and willing to serve Him wherever He wants us.

A relationship with God isn't just serving Him. You know that already, right?

A relationship with God is loving Him. Trusting Him. Being so close to Him that you want to serve Him just because He's so cool.

It's not serving Him on a missions trip just because He says so. It's not doing it because everyone else is.

So where's your heart? Have it out with God. He's able to take whatever you say to Him--He's not going to dissolve in tears or destroy the world if you're honest about your feelings, especially in relation to missions trips.

Then open your heart to what HE has to say to you, and you might be surprised at what you find.
