Real Life Q&A with Camy Tang

March 2006

Q:
I'm supposed to be thinking about the future--my major, what job I want to do, my career plan. It's so overwhelming. I'm still in Junior High/High School. What do I do?

A: B-r-e-a-t-h-e. Don't stress. It's really not that bad.

You do need to think about it, but it's not set in stone. Your parents will probably also have some thoughts about what they think you should do with your life, because, obviously, they don't want to feed and clothe you forever.

God gives each of us certain abilities that we excel at. That doesn't always mean that's where you'll make your career, but it's a starting point for what you'd like to do.

Say you rock at basketball. However, you won't know until you grow more and practice harder if you can become a pro ball player. In the meantime, think about what other options you have. Do you like science? Business? Art? English?

While it's entirely possible you could become a female Michael Jordon, you also need to plan for if you can't make it in the pro league, or if you sustain some unfortunate injury.

Look at the different types of occupations you feel drawn to. Media? Biotech? Investments? Sales? What are you good at naturally?

There are also some tests you can take that gage your aptitude for certain things. Books like "What Color Is Your Parachute?" are also good. Your school guidance counselor might also have some ideas and resources.

Most of all, pray. God will guide you in the right path, as long as you're willing to go where He asks. He might also lead the way for you in a roundabout way. For example, I went from wanting to be a writer, to a physicist, to a psychologist, to a doctor, to a biologist, back to my first love--writing. Only God can do that, and provide for me financially at the same time. Trust Him to take care of you, too.

Things can always change. Explore your options now, and realize that God knows the plans He has for you.
